Our History

The Kearns Academy

Kearns Academy is named for Dorthy “Dot” Kendall Kearns, a lifelong High Point resident. She served as a member of the Boards of Education for the High Point City Schools, and Guilford County Schools. Additionally, she was the first woman to serve on the Guilford County Board of Commissioners and the first woman to serve as its Chair. She was deeply involved in leading the merger of the High Point City Schools, Greensboro City Schools, and the Guilford County Schools in 1993 to become what we know today as Guilford County Schools. In 2016 the Guilford County Board of Education changed the name of what was at that time The Academy at High Point Central to The Kearns Academy in honor of her service and dedication to the students and families of our community. In the summer of 2017, The Kearns Academy moved to its current location on McGuinn Drive in High Point.
